Author Notes

Charlie Russell was born Andrew Charles Russell in Pincher Creek, Alberta, Canada on August 19, 1941. He became a naturalist who researched grizzly bears by living among them and argued for a view of the animals based on coexistence rather than fear. He and photographer and artist Maureen Enns would spend months each year for a decade living among bears in a remote part of eastern Russia. They wrote several books based on those experiences including Grizzly Heart: Living Without Fear Among the Brown Bears of Kamchatka and Grizzly Seasons: Life with the Brown Bears of Kamchatka. He died from complications after surgery on May 7, 2018 at the age of 76.
