School Library Journal Review

Gr 3-5-Three more unconventional series entries, designed by Michael George, that combine full-page, full-color photographs and interleaved half-pages of text. The illustrations in Solar System are dramatic but potentially misleading, since nearly all are composites, and none are identified as such. Planets and moons are crowded together; backdrops are sometimes starry, sometimes completely black; and the ``photo'' of Pluto, its moon Charon, and the Sun is most likely an artist's rendering, since no space probe has come so close to that remote planet. The text, which amounts to no more than a running commentary, is weighted down with exclamation points, bland writing (``The temperature on Mercury ranges from very hot to icy cold.''), and odd images (``Saturn looks like a large ball in the middle of a phonograph record!''). Jupiter greets readers with an uncaptioned photo of a moldy-looking jovian moon and, a few pages later, a computer-enhanced view of the surface of Venus, also used in Solar System, but McDonald takes a calmer tone, and the illustrations capture the largest planet's turbulent majesty. Space Shuttle mixes well-chosen photos with smaller shots of astronauts at work inside and outside-effective publicity for our space program, though Murray attempts to revive the ``shuttle-as-economical-delivery-van'' myth. The territory these three books cover has been so thoroughly mined already that, even visually, they will be superfluous to all but the most comprehensive collections.
