Booklist Review

Being able to read tracks and sign is a way to share more deeply in the life of wild creatures. This modern, ecologically oriented guide ~stresses understanding the meaning of these indicators more than merely sighting them, yet its comprehensive information about the animals of the U.S. and Canada gives photographers, hikers, or hunters a much improved chance of finding them. The most important aid is the large number of photographs and drawings. Pictures of track under varying conditions, and of scat, nests, food caches, and the animals themselves, are plentiful. Combined with dimensioned drawings of track patterns at various gaits and informative captions, these visuals are invaluable. Rezendes provides a knowledgeable text to support these visuals, with data on behavior and environmental factors. Stories occasionally brighten the descriptions, but basically this is a concentrated field guide and easy-to-read reference for nature lovers and students. ~--Virginia Dwyer
