Since the invention of photography before the Civil War, our ability to document the waste, brutality, and sacrifice has improved dramatically. No longer do young men go to battle with mother in their songs and dreams of glory. This collection of photos from the National Archives gives us a taste of war in photos and some drawings. Library Journal Review

Heller mined the Still Picture Branch of the National Archives for over 1500 photos and reproductions depicting America's wars from the Revolution to Vietnam. The work is organized by wars, with the longer conflicts subdivided into thematic categories. Heller's selections highlight the transition from martial glory to realism rendered possible by photography, and the subsequent development of photography as an art form as well as a mirror of events. An intelligent introduction, analyzing the portrayal of war in pictures in the last two centuries, enhances the value of this book for public and private collections in U.S. military history.-- Dennis E.
