Choice Review

The National Archives has produced another excellent guide, this one, covering the period from the 1770s to the 1970s, describes nearly six million photographic prints, negatives, posters, transparencies, and other illustrative material from more than 170 departments, agencies, and bureaus. Mathew Brady, Howard Chandler Christy, Lewis Hine, William Henry Jackson, and Dorothea Lange are among the most familiar photographers. Although the guide excludes visual material imbedded in textual records housed in other branches of the National Archives, or located in presidential libraries, or in the regional archives of Federal Records Centers, it nevertheless includes a vast array of images that "expressively illustrate every aspect of the American experience" (p. ix). Guide entries, except for a small number for donated collections, listed in chronological order, are arranged by major record group and provide name, date range, and approximate number of items, along with a brief series description and name of photographer. Archivist and compiler Barbara Burger has worked with still pictures in the National Archives for a dozen years. Recommended for all university libraries. -N. C. Burckel, Washington University
