This dictionary ("BBI" is an acronym for the authors' names) is an impressive and exhaustive dictionary of word combinations. This updated edition has word combinations in the English language and includes new combinations that have entered the language since the last edition (CH, Apr'87), especially in the areas of computers and the Internet. Primarily written for learners of English as a second language at advanced levels, this book is somewhat similar to Longman Dictionary of English Idioms (rev. ed., 1984). Words are listed alphabetically by the dominant word, word combinations are given, and at times definitions, illustrative phrases, indications of British English vs. American English, and the like are included. The extensive introduction is a bit too complicated for most users to understand fully, but most individuals can skip it and still use the book reasonably well. Longman is easier for nonnative English speakers to use and understand, but unfortunately it is neither as up-to-date nor as complete. Recommended to libraries serving nonnative English speakers, but others (e.g., writers and language buffs) will find this book helpful as well. C. Pracht Southeast Missouri State University
