Choice Review

Although the US has relied less on international trade than many other countries because of its large domestic market and economic diversity, this is changing, particularly with the increasing number of US firms interested in exporting to foreign markets. Zuckerman and Biederman (both trade consultants and authors) provides a concise yet comprehensive guide to export/import trade, with primary focus on export procedures for US companies. A brisk overview of accessing export markets, as well as available channels of distribution, is supported by directories of US sources for further information. The authors also cover the costs of exporting and their effects on pricing, together with methods of payment. Additional chapters discuss the essentials of the mechanics of shipping and entry procedures, duties, insurance, bonding, classification, valuation, tariffs, and quotas. Copies of basic documents needed to effect export transactions are given in appropriate chapters. The import side is covered largely in a single chapter. This is a practical, readable, up-to-date guide to exporting. Numerous references to more detailed information make this an excellent point of departure for students and practitioners alike.
