Booklist Review

This handsome, abundantly illustrated guide imaginatively presents infant development from the vantage of a growing baby. Such developmental milestones as birth, relating to family members, learning language, and movement are expressed as challenges faced and accomplishments reached by the baby. Psychologist Karmiloff-Smith and her daughter, who also completed training in psychology, deftly interweave a great deal of current scholarship into their interesting, eloquent, and concise text. They adopt a tone that is at once respectful and excited about infant development, and that avoids the tension, anxiety, and stress that are too often undercurrents in writing aimed at parents. Lots of photographs of adorable babies add appeal to the book, helping make it an especially attractive, useful choice for beginning the education of parents-to-be, as well as making it a very good public library purchase. --Kathryn Carpenter
