Choice Review

Fagan offers a guide to the common wildflowers, shrubs, and trees of southwestern Utah and adjacent parts of Colorado, Arizona, and New Mexico, intended primarily for the reader with an interest in the natural world but little training in biology. He describes 189 species of plants common in the region, with a color photograph and description for each. The photographs are attractive and well reproduced, offering a good idea of what the plant is like; the descriptions are brief and fairly nontechnical, but carefully prepared and reasonably informative. There is a well-written, brief introduction to the habitats and plant communities of the area and the structure and function of plants, with discussion of some of the adaptations plants show to the arid climate and the unique geology of the region. A useful, nontechnical introduction to the botany of an interesting area. General readers; lower-division undergraduates; two-year technical program students. A. Whittemore; Missouri Botanical Garden
