Booklist Review

"Will the feminine dramatic aesthetic survive?" Marsha Norman asks in the introduction to the 1997 edition of Women Playwrights. On the strength of the five plays in it and the five in its 1996 series mate, the answer is a resounding "yes!" The power, richness, and variety of the plays dazzle, and even a casual perusal reveals the full range of dramatic modes, from political satire in Theresa Rebeck's View of the Dome to moving stage biography in Linda Manning's The Life of Charlotte Bronte to naturalistic cautionary tale in Julia Jordan's Tatjana in Color to domestic tragedy in Emily Mann's lyrical adaptation of Garcia Lorca, The House of Bernarda Alba. None of the playwrights represented are household names yet--Mann may be the best known, for her Broadway hit, Having Our Saybut that only underscores the importance of these collections in promoting or, at least, disseminating the work of less-often-produced but highly worthy talents. It is really only a matter of time before writers of this caliber become nationally known. --Jack Helbig
