Library Journal Review

Gr 6 Up-Taylor has been studying puffins for over 20 years and uses his own extensive knowledge and that of his colleagues to give readers insight into these endearing birds. He admits that almost nothing is known of puffin life at sea, where they spend half the year, because they are scattered widely in very remote areas. The information that is provided concerns the characteristics, mating and feeding habits, and communication of the Atlantic, horned, and tufted puffins gathered from extensive studies conducted during mating season on land. The author's writing style is more difficult than that of other entries in the series. The currency of the material and the wonderful color photographs make this title worthy of consideration for YA collections. For younger readers, try Susan E.
