School Library Journal Review

Gr 4-7-This reorganized, rewritten, and re-illustrated edition of Mexico (Children's, 1984) focuses more on modern culture, with deeper discussions of holidays, the arts, and religion, and provides additional full-color photographs and maps. While there is less information on the history of the country, the chapter covering it is adequate, although a bit weak on 20th-century events. Other major topics include geography, government, and economy. For the most part, the writing and presentation of information are of high quality, although Stein tends to generalize, and his bias is sometimes evident. For example, he writes, "Mexico is an uncommonly beautiful land. Anyone who has been there always longs to go back and experience again the thrilling vistas of its mountains and seacoasts." Minor problems aside, this book is second only to Jack Rummel's Mexico (Chelsea, 1998).-Denise E. Agosto, formerly at Midland County Public Library, TX (c) Copyright 2010.
