Booklist Review

Gr. 6^-10. The total lack of any bibliographic references or source notes is a serious drawback, but otherwise these detailed accounts of two countries in the news are readable, informative, current, and fair, with lots of good photos and up-to-date maps. The focus is on what is happening today, but each author also does a good job of relating the contemporary scene to the history, geography, politics, culture, and economic conditions. The cover photo of a lion is not the best image for contemporary South Africa, and one volume in the series that is not recommended is Stefoff's West Bank/Gaza Strip, which, for some reason, has religious Jews at prayer on the cover. Other volumes in the Major World Nations series are listed in this issue's Series Roundup. --Hazel Rochman
